If you’re looking at clear aligners other than Invisalign, Spark and Angel Aligner are two systems we offer at North Ryde Dentistry. They cost the same at our practice, so the decision usually comes down to the features each manufacturer offers, how the trays feel and what suits your case.

Spark vs Angel Aligner at a glance

Manufacturer Ormco (USA) Angelalign Technology (China)
Tray material TruGEN / TruGEN XR masterControl S
Planning software Spark Approver iOrtho

The manufacturers

Spark is made by Ormco, a long-standing US orthodontic company that also makes brackets and wires for braces; Ormco says Spark trays are made in the USA. Angel Aligner is made by Angelalign Technology, founded in Shanghai in 2003 and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Materials and features

Ormco says its TruGEN material is designed to stay clear, resist staining and keep consistent contact with the teeth. Angelalign says its masterControl S material delivers steady force, and promotes its Intelligent Root System for planning around tooth roots, along with angelButton and angelAttach designs. These are the manufacturers’ descriptions; independent comparisons between the two are limited.

Planning and treatment

The process is the same for both at our practice: a complimentary consultation, a 3D iTero scan and photos, a digital plan you can review (Spark Approver or iOrtho), then fitting and regular reviews every 6 to 10 weeks. Ormco recommends wearing Spark about 22 hours a day, and Angel Aligner is also designed for full-time wear apart from meals and cleaning.

Cost in North Ryde

Both Spark and Angel Aligner range from $3,700 to $8,490 at North Ryde Dentistry, which is $500 less than Invisalign at each end of the range. Additional retainers are $400 for three Spark sets and $350 for three Angel sets. Your fee is confirmed in writing after your assessment.

Which should you choose?

For many cases either system would be suitable. Your dentist will recommend one based on the movements needed and how each system handles them, and you can ask to see and feel sample trays. Risks and limitations

Whichever system you choose, aligner treatment isn’t suitable for everyone and results vary. Expect some tenderness with each new set, a short adjustment period for speech, and the need to remove the trays to eat. Treatment relies on wearing the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, attachments or interproximal reduction may be needed, and teeth can move back if retainers aren’t worn. Any invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Read more about treatment risks.
