Traditional Braces in North Ryde

Braces: How They Work and What to Expect

Braces for Teens and Adults

Traditional braces use small brackets bonded to the teeth and a thin wire that is adjusted over time to move the teeth into a new position. They can be used for crowded or spaced teeth, crooked teeth and some bite problems, in teenagers and adults.

Braces are one option alongside clear aligners such as Invisalign. Your dentist will examine your teeth and bite, take records such as X-rays and photos, and explain which options may suit you, how long treatment is likely to take, the risks and the cost. More complex cases may be referred to a specialist orthodontist.

Braces may be considered for:

  • crowded, overlapping or rotated teeth
  • gaps between teeth
  • some overbites, underbites, crossbites and open bites
  • cases where clear aligners are less suitable

Alternatives include clear aligners, treating only a few teeth, or no treatment. Your dentist will explain the pros and cons of each option for your situation.

  • Consultation and records: your dentist examines your teeth and bite, takes X-rays and photos, and explains your options, the likely treatment time and a written quote.
  • Fitting the braces: brackets are bonded to the teeth and the wire is placed. Teeth often feel sore for a few days after fitting and after adjustments.
  • Adjustments: you will have regular reviews, usually every 4 to 8 weeks, to adjust the wire and check progress. Treatment time varies from person to person and commonly runs from about 12 months to more than two years.
  • Retainers: after the braces come off you will need to wear a retainer to help stop the teeth moving back. Many people need to wear a retainer long term.

Your dentist will explain the risks that apply to you. They can include:

  • discomfort and sore teeth or cheeks, especially after adjustments
  • decay or white marks on the teeth if the areas around the brackets are not kept clean
  • gum inflammation
  • shortening of the tooth roots (root resorption)
  • broken brackets or wires that need repair
  • teeth moving back after treatment if retainers are not worn as advised

Results vary from person to person, and treatment can take longer than first estimated. All treatment carries risks.

The cost depends on how complex your case is, how long treatment takes and the type of brackets used. You will receive a written quote after your assessment. Your health fund may cover part of the cost if you have orthodontic cover, depending on your level of extras cover and any waiting periods.

Interest-free payment plans are available for eligible patients, subject to terms and approval. You can also compare braces with Invisalign clear aligners.
