Accidents and sudden dental pain can happen at any time. Knowing when to call can help you get the right care quickly.
When to call
- A tooth is knocked out, broken or badly loosened, for example from a sports injury or a fall.
- You have severe toothache or facial swelling.
- A filling or crown has come out and the tooth is painful.
- Bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure.
For swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, high fever or a serious injury, go to a hospital emergency department or call 000.

Call first
Phone the practice so the team can advise whether you need to be seen immediately and what to do in the meantime.
Managing symptoms until your appointment
- Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet.
- Use a cold compress on the outside of the face for swelling.
- Keep any broken tooth pieces; store a knocked-out adult tooth in milk.
Cost
The fee depends on the examination, X-rays and treatment needed. You will be told the fee before treatment.
