Spark and Invisalign are two of the clear aligner systems we offer at North Ryde Dentistry. Both straighten teeth with a series of removable clear trays, and both can treat a wide range of cases. The differences are in who makes them, the tray material, the planning software and the fee. Here’s how they compare, and how we help you choose.

Who makes them
Invisalign is made by Align Technology, which introduced clear aligners to the market in the late 1990s and has the longest track record of any brand. Spark is made by Ormco, an orthodontic company known for brackets and wires used in traditional braces. Ormco says Spark trays are manufactured in the USA.
Tray material
Invisalign uses SmartTrack, a multi-layer material Align describes as designed for a snug fit and consistent force. Spark uses TruGEN, which Ormco says is designed to stay clear, resist staining and maintain contact with the teeth. Some patients notice a difference in how the trays look or feel, but comfort is individual and both materials can discolour if you drink tea, coffee or red wine with the trays in.
Treatment planning
With either system, we take a 3D iTero scan and plan your tooth movements digitally before anything is made. Invisalign plans are built in ClinCheck; Spark plans in Spark Approver. In both cases you can see the planned movements and the estimated number of aligners before you commit. The quality of the plan depends far more on the dentist’s assessment than on the software.
Cost in North Ryde
At our practice, Spark treatment ranges from $3,700 to $8,490 and Invisalign from $4,200 to $8,990. Where your case sits depends on how many teeth need to move, how far, and how many aligners and refinements are needed. Your fee is confirmed in writing after your assessment, and if you have extras cover with orthodontic benefits your health fund may contribute.
Which one is better?
Neither is better for everyone. Direct clinical comparisons between brands are still limited, and both can work well when the case is suitable, the plan is sound and the aligners are worn as directed. In practice the choice often comes down to fee, how the trays feel and your dentist’s view of your case. Risks and limitations
Whichever system you choose, aligner treatment isn’t suitable for everyone and results vary. Expect some tenderness with each new set, a short adjustment period for speech, and the need to remove the trays to eat. Treatment relies on wearing the aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, attachments or interproximal reduction may be needed, and teeth can move back if retainers aren’t worn. Any invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Read more about treatment risks.
Frequently asked questions

Do Spark aligners work as well as Invisalign?
Both can be effective for suitable cases when well planned and worn as directed. Independent research comparing the two directly is still limited.
Can I switch from Invisalign to Spark?
It is sometimes possible to start a new plan with a different system, but it usually means new scans and a new plan. Talk to your dentist about the costs and timing.
