When to book
A first dental visit is usually recommended when the first teeth appear or by the first birthday. Early visits let the dentist monitor development and give you advice on caring for baby teeth.
How to prepare
- Book a time when your child is usually rested, such as the morning.
- Talk about the visit in simple, positive terms.
- Write down any questions you have.
- Stay calm yourself; children pick up on how parents feel.
What happens at the visit
For very young children, the dentist introduces the chair and instruments, then gently checks the teeth, gums and jaws. For older children, a gentle clean may be done. Preschoolers can feel more anxious, and the team will take things at their pace.
General dentist or specialist?
The dentists at North Ryde Dentistry are general dentists who see children routinely. Children with complex needs may be referred to a specialist paediatric dentist.
