Common Causes of Toothache and How They Are Treated

Toothache is one of the most common reasons people see a dentist. It can come on suddenly or build up over months. Here are some common causes and how they may be treated.

Food caught between teeth

Trapped food can cause sharp pain that settles once it is removed. Gently floss or brush. If you cannot remove it, see your dentist.

Tooth decay

This is the most common cause. Small to medium cavities can usually be treated with a filling. If decay has reached the nerve, root canal treatment and often a crown may be recommended. If a tooth cannot be restored, extraction may be discussed.

Cracked or broken teeth

Trauma or grinding can crack or chip teeth. Small chips may be repaired with bonding; larger cracks may need a crown or root canal treatment. If you grind, a night splint may be recommended.

Gum problems

Gum infection or inflammation can also cause pain and needs assessment.

See your dentist

Pain relief may ease symptoms but does not treat the cause. See toothache relief and book an appointment.
