The different types of fillings are the following: gold, silver, tooth-coloured composites, ceramics, and also glass ionomer. Each of these fillings has their own set of advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to you and your dentist to decide on the right kind of filling to choose.
What do you mean by indirect fillings?
These are the same with the composite or tooth-coloured fillings, the only difference is that they are done in the laboratory and usually require two sessions before they are placed on the tooth. These types of fillings are intended for teeth that have lost a large amount of tooth structure through fracture, decay or generalised deterioration.
These are known to be more durable than the traditional fillings and they last severval times longer that traditional direct filling .
Direct onlays and inlays are also available at our practice where we use the latest CADCAM technology to manufacture the ceramic inlays and onlays in one appointment with our CEREC machine.

A temporary filling is just that only for a certain time and not meant to last. It is needed under the following circumstances:
- When the fillings need more than one appointment.
- During root canal therapy, to let the tooth nerve settle down if ever the pulp has become infected.
- Some Emergency appointments.
What are the right ways to take care fillings?
For the fillings to stay in place, anyone who has had fillings should practice good oral hygiene, daily brushing after every meal, daily flossing, and rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash at least once daily. When you notice that the filling is cracked, has a sharp edge, or a piece of the tooth is missing, it is crucial that you contact the dentist right away.
What are some after effects of having dental fillings?
In a large majority of cases teeth should not feel sensitive or uncomfortable after a filling has been placed.
However, there are occasions that the tooth may be sensitive which is usually directly related to how large or deep the filling was required to be. Occasionally the tooth tooth may be sensitive to air, sweet and cold foods, pressure on the tooth, etc. However, if it the symptoms persists for an extended period of time further investigation may be warranted.
