“Invisible braces” usually refers to clear aligners, such as Invisalign. They are removable plastic trays rather than brackets and wires. They are less noticeable than metal braces, but aligners and the small attachments often used with them can still be visible.
How they work
After an assessment and 3D scan, a series of aligners is made. Each is worn for one to two weeks and moves the teeth a small amount towards the planned position.
What they may be used for
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Some overbite, underbite and crossbite problems
Suitability depends on your teeth and bite. Some cases are more predictable with fixed braces or need a specialist orthodontist.
The commitment
- Aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day.
- They are removed to eat and drink anything other than water.
- Teeth must be cleaned before aligners go back in.
- Retainers are needed long term after treatment.
Teenagers can use aligners if they can commit to wearing them as directed.
Risks
These include discomfort, gum problems, decay if hygiene is poor, root shortening and relapse without retainers.
