Clear aligner treatment is planned and supervised by your dentist, so choosing the right practitioner matters. Here are some questions to ask.

Questions to ask

What treatment involves

  1. Assessment: examination, X-rays, photos and a 3D scan.
  2. Planning: a digital plan shows the proposed movements.
  3. Aligners: each set is worn for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day.
  4. Reviews: regular check-ups; some people need refinement aligners.
  5. Retainers: needed long term to help hold teeth in position.

What to expect

Pressure or tenderness is common for a day or two with each new aligner. Treatment time varies from person to person depending on complexity and how consistently aligners are worn.

Risks

These include discomfort, gum problems, decay if hygiene is poor, root shortening and relapse without retainers.
