Many people have questions about the safety of the materials used in their fillings. Here are answers to common concerns.
Are composite fillings safe?
Composite (tooth-coloured) fillings are made from resin and fine glass or ceramic particles and are widely used. Some people have sensitivity to specific components; tell your dentist about any allergies.
What about amalgam fillings?
Amalgam contains mercury bound with other metals. Australian health authorities consider existing amalgam fillings safe for most people, and removing sound amalgam fillings is not generally recommended because removal itself releases mercury vapour. Amalgam is generally avoided for some groups, such as pregnant women and young children.

Can old fillings cause problems?
All fillings can wear, crack or leak at the edges over time, which can allow decay to develop underneath. Regular check-ups and X-rays help detect this. If a filling needs replacing, your dentist will discuss material options.
