A Positive Approach to Your Child's Smile

We believe that a child’s early experiences at the dentist shape their attitude toward oral health for life. That’s why we design every moment of your child’s visit to be calm and predictable. Our team takes time to explain each step, listen to concerns and discuss ways to manage anxiety during dental care.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We recommend bringing your child in for their first check-up when their first teeth appear, or by about 12 months of age. Early visits are mostly about checking how teeth and jaws are developing, and about helping your child feel comfortable in the dental chair.

At the first visit, our dentist will:

  • say hello and let your child get used to the room, the chair and the team at their own pace
  • gently check their teeth and gums, explaining each step in simple words
  • do a light clean if there is plaque or staining
  • talk with you about brushing, diet, bottles and dummies, and what to expect as more teeth come through

Younger children can sit on a parent’s lap. Short, positive visits help children build good habits and feel confident about the dentist as they grow. If your child is nervous, let us know when you book and we’ll plan the visit around them.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) and Health Funds

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Medicare program that helps eligible families with the cost of basic dental care for children aged 0–17. Eligibility generally depends on your child being eligible for Medicare and your family receiving certain government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A, during the year.

Eligible children can receive a capped total benefit over two consecutive calendar years. It covers basic services such as examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealants, fillings and extractions. It doesn’t cover orthodontics, cosmetic treatment or dental care in hospital.

You can check your child’s eligibility and remaining balance through your Medicare online account (via myGov). Please ask our team whether CDBS applies to your child’s visit before your appointment.

If you have private health insurance, we accept most major health funds and have HICAPS, so eligible claims can be processed on the day. A No Gap children’s check-up and clean is available where your health fund pays a benefit for the included items (offer terms apply). Call us on (02) 8090 1102 and we can help you check what your fund covers.

Children’s Dentistry FAQs

What age should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend a first visit when the first teeth appear, or by about 12 months of age. Early visits focus on checking development and helping your child feel at ease. Read more in when should my child have their first dental check-up and clean?

How often should children have a check-up?

Most children are seen every six to twelve months. Your dentist will recommend a timeframe based on your child’s teeth, diet and risk of decay. Learn what’s involved in a professional teeth clean and what it costs.

Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?

Yes. Baby teeth help children eat and speak, and they hold space for the adult teeth coming through underneath. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection, so it’s worth treating early. If your child has a toothache, a knocked tooth or swelling, see our emergency dental appointments page or call us. For facial swelling with fever, go to hospital.

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a thin protective coating placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where deep grooves can trap food and plaque. Where appropriate, sealants help protect newly erupted molars from decay. Placing them is quick, and there are usually no injections or drilling.

Is fluoride safe for my child?

Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay. Where appropriate, we may apply a fluoride treatment during your child’s check-up. At home, from 18 months you can use a small smear of low-fluoride children’s toothpaste, unless your dentist advises otherwise. Help your child brush until they’re about eight years old.

Do I need a paediatric dentist for my child?

Most children’s check-ups, cleans and fillings can be looked after by a general dentist. Our dentists see children of all ages. If your child needs specialist care, we can refer you to a registered specialist paediatric dentist.
