Braces are usually worn for many months, often between one and three years. During that time, teeth and gums still need careful cleaning, as food and plaque collect easily around brackets and wires.

Can I have a professional clean with braces?
Yes. Your dentist or hygienist can clean around the brackets and wires without removing them. Regular cleans, usually about every six months or as advised, help reduce the risk of gum inflammation, decay and white marks on the teeth.
Cleaning at home
- Brush carefully around each bracket, above and below the wire.
- Use interdental brushes or floss threaders to clean between teeth.
- A fluoride mouth rinse may be recommended.
- Avoid sticky and sugary foods.
