Clear aligners are removable plastic trays that move teeth gradually. Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner.

How they work

Each aligner is made to a slightly different shape. Worn in sequence, usually for one to two weeks each, they apply gentle pressure to move teeth towards the planned position. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help.

The treatment steps

  1. Assessment: examination, X-rays and discussion of suitability.
  2. Scan and plan: a 3D scan is used to plan movements.
  3. Wearing aligners: 20 to 22 hours a day, removed only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth.
  4. Reviews: regular check-ups, and refinement aligners if needed.
  5. Retainers: needed long term after treatment.

Day to day

Suitability and risks

Aligners are not suitable for every case. Risks include discomfort, gum problems, decay if hygiene is poor, root shortening and relapse.
