Clear aligner treatment is planned and supervised by your dentist, so choosing the right practitioner matters. Here are some questions to ask.
Questions to ask
- Am I suitable for aligners, or would braces or a specialist orthodontist be more appropriate for my bite?
- How many aligners and how long is treatment estimated to take, and what happens if it takes longer?
- Are refinements, reviews and retainers included in the quote?
- What are the risks for me?
What treatment involves
- Assessment: examination, X-rays, photos and a 3D scan.
- Planning: a digital plan shows the proposed movements.
- Aligners: each set is worn for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day.
- Reviews: regular check-ups; some people need refinement aligners.
- Retainers: needed long term to help hold teeth in position.
What to expect
Pressure or tenderness is common for a day or two with each new aligner. Treatment time varies from person to person depending on complexity and how consistently aligners are worn.
Risks
These include discomfort, gum problems, decay if hygiene is poor, root shortening and relapse without retainers.
