If you are considering clear aligners, having a practice close to home or work can make regular reviews easier to fit into your week. Here is what to consider.
What to look for in a provider
- A thorough assessment with X-rays, photos and a scan before any treatment is recommended.
- Honest advice about suitability, including when fixed braces or referral to a specialist orthodontist would be more appropriate.
- Clear information about the number of aligners, estimated time frame, reviews, refinements, retainers and total cost.
- Convenient appointments, as treatment involves regular check-ups.
How treatment works
A 3D scan is used to plan the proposed tooth movements. You wear each set of aligners for about one to two weeks, for 20 to 22 hours a day. Small attachments may be bonded to some teeth.
Risks
Orthodontic treatment can cause discomfort, and there is a risk of gum problems, decay if teeth are not cleaned well, root shortening and relapse if retainers are not worn.
