Invisalign is a clear aligner system used for some orthodontic concerns. Treatment starts with an assessment and a 3D scan of your teeth, which is used to plan a series of aligners.
Possible advantages
- Aligners are less noticeable than metal braces, though attachments and aligners may still be visible.
- They are removable for eating and for brushing and flossing.
- There are no brackets or wires to break.
Limitations
- Aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Treatment slows or stalls if they are left out.
- They are not suitable for every case. Some complex movements are more predictable with fixed braces or need a specialist orthodontist.
- Retainers are needed long term after treatment.
Risks
Risks include discomfort, gum problems, decay if teeth are not cleaned before aligners go back in, root shortening and relapse.
An assessment will show whether aligners suit you. Read more about orthodontics and Invisalign at North Ryde Dentistry.
