What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front of selected teeth to change their colour, shape or size. They may be considered by adults who want to change the appearance of teeth that are chipped, worn, discoloured, uneven or slightly out of line. Veneers do not move teeth and do not treat decay or gum disease.

Veneers are one option among several. Your dentist will assess your teeth, gums and bite and discuss options such as teeth whitening, orthodontic treatment, bonding, veneers or no cosmetic treatment. The benefits, risks, costs and upkeep differ between these options.

Porcelain (ceramic) veneers are made individually for each tooth, usually by a dental laboratory. Porcelain resists staining well and reflects light in a similar way to natural enamel. Placing them usually involves removing a thin layer of enamel. More about porcelain veneers.

Composite resin veneers are built up directly on the tooth, often in one visit, using the same tooth-coloured material as white fillings. They generally cost less and may need little or no enamel removed, but they are more prone to staining and wear and may need polishing, repair or replacement sooner. More about composite veneers.

Your first appointment is a detailed discussion of what you would like to change, including the shape, size and colour of your teeth and how many teeth might be involved. We take photographs and X-rays to check the health of your teeth and gums.

Any decay or gum disease needs to be treated first. If your teeth are crowded or out of line, your dentist may suggest orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign before, or instead of, veneers so that less tooth structure needs to be removed. If you prefer a natural look, tell your dentist; the planned shape and shade can often be previewed with a mock-up before treatment.

  • Where enamel is removed, the change is permanent and the tooth will always need a covering.
  • Veneers can chip, crack or come off, and may need repair or replacement.
  • Teeth may be sensitive after treatment.
  • Veneers do not whiten; the colour of your natural teeth may change over time while the veneers do not.
  • Veneered teeth can still decay and gums can still become diseased.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

How long veneers last varies with the material, your bite, grinding habits and how well you look after them. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily and keep up regular check-ups. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens or fingernails. If you grind or clench, your dentist may recommend a night splint. Ask your dentist about likely maintenance and the cost of future repair or replacement.

The cost depends on the material, the number of teeth and any treatment needed beforehand. You will receive a written treatment plan and quote after your consultation.
