Wisdom teeth (third molars) usually come through between about 18 and 25 years of age. Some come through without any trouble. Others don’t have enough room and become impacted: stuck partly or fully under the gum or bone, or angled against the tooth in front.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Your dentist will examine your mouth and take an OPG (a panoramic X-ray) to check the position of the teeth and nearby nerves and sinuses. They will then explain whether removal is advisable, what is involved, the risks and the cost. If your case is better suited to an oral surgeon, we will refer you.
Tooth extraction at North Ryde Dentistry, including wisdom teeth, ranges from $200 to $600 per tooth. The fee depends on whether the tooth has come through, how it is angled, and how much bone needs to be worked around. Your dentist will examine the tooth, take an x-ray, and give you a quote before any treatment.
If a wisdom tooth is causing pain or swelling now, an emergency appointment with an exam and OPG x-ray starts at $195. See our emergency appointments page.
Many wisdom teeth can be removed at the practice under local anaesthetic. If a tooth is deeply impacted, sits close to the nerve in the lower jaw, or you would prefer to be asleep for the procedure, your dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and will explain why. Either way, the first step is an assessment with an x-ray.
North Ryde Dentistry is at Unit 4, Building B, 64 Talavera Road, Macquarie Park, opposite Macquarie Centre and three minutes’ walk from Macquarie University Metro, with free parking on site. We are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9am to 6pm, and Saturday 8:30am to 4pm. Call (02) 8090 1102 or book online.

Yes. A full-mouth OPG x-ray shows the position of the wisdom teeth, their roots and nearby nerves, and helps your dentist plan whether removal can be done here or needs referral.

Most people feel better within a few days to a week. Swelling and tenderness usually peak in the first two to three days. Your dentist will give you aftercare instructions and explain the risks before treatment.
Many extras policies include a benefit for extractions. We have HICAPS, so eligible claims can be processed on the day. North Ryde Dentistry is a Westfund Provider of Choice.
Talk to your dentist if you notice:
Some impacted wisdom teeth cause no symptoms at all. X-rays can show problems such as cysts or damage to neighbouring teeth. Your dentist will explain whether monitoring or removal is more suitable for you.
Your dentist will explain the risks that apply to your situation. They can include:
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
The cost depends on how many teeth are removed, whether the removal is simple or surgical, and whether sedation is used. You will receive a written quote after your assessment. Your health fund may cover part of the cost, depending on your level of extras cover.
Interest-free payment plans are available for eligible patients.
