Accidents can happen at any time. Knowing what to do can make a difference to the outcome.
Stay calm
Take a moment to assess what has happened, whether there is bleeding or pain, and what first aid is needed.
First aid for common situations
- Broken or chipped tooth: rinse with warm salty water, apply gentle pressure to any bleeding and book an emergency appointment.
- Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse briefly in milk if dirty and try to put it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk and seek care immediately.
- Jaw that will not open or close properly: this can have several causes. Seek prompt assessment. If it follows an injury, go to a hospital emergency department.
If the practice is closed
Hospital emergency departments are open 24 hours for serious injuries, facial swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Call 000 in an emergency.
