Preventive dentistry aims to reduce the chance of dental problems. Regular professional cleans, together with good home care, are a central part of this.
What happens at a clean?
- Plaque and tartar are removed from above and just below the gumline.
- Teeth are polished to remove surface stains.
- Fluoride may be applied to help strengthen enamel.
What your dentist checks
- Early signs of decay
- Gum health and signs of gum disease
- Wear that may indicate grinding
- Existing fillings and crowns
- Soft tissues, including checking for signs of oral cancer
How often?
Many people are seen every six months, but your dentist will recommend an interval based on your needs.
Home care
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily. Your dentist or hygienist can show you techniques that suit your mouth.
