Why regular check-ups matter
A check-up and clean is one of the simplest ways to look after your teeth. Problems such as decay and gum disease are usually easier to treat when found early.

What happens at a check-up?
- Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and mouth.
- X-rays may be taken if needed.
- A scale and clean removes plaque and tartar, and your teeth are polished.
- Fluoride may be applied.
- Your dentist discusses any findings and home care.
What affects the fee?
The fee depends on what is included at your visit, for example whether X-rays or fluoride are needed and how much cleaning is required. You will be told the fee before any additional treatment.
Health funds
Many extras policies contribute to check-ups and cleans, subject to annual limits and waiting periods. Check with your fund.
How often?
Many people are seen every six months, but your dentist will recommend an interval based on your needs.
