If you are thinking about changing the appearance of your teeth, the first step is a consultation. Here is what to expect.
Understanding your goals
Your dentist will ask what you would like to change and why. It is helpful to be specific, for example colour, chips, gaps or the shape of certain teeth.
Examination
Your teeth, gums and bite are checked, and X-rays and photographs may be taken. Any decay or gum disease needs to be treated before cosmetic treatment.
Treatments that may be discussed
- Teeth whitening to lighten natural teeth.
- Composite bonding or veneers for chips, gaps or shape changes.
- Porcelain veneers or crowns, which usually involve removing tooth structure.
- Orthodontic treatment such as braces or aligners to move teeth.
- Implants or bridges to replace missing teeth.
Risks, alternatives and cost
Your dentist should explain the benefits and risks of each option, what is and is not reversible, the likely maintenance, the alternatives (including no treatment) and the cost. You should receive a written plan and quote and have time to think it over.
