Cosmetic dental treatment aims to change the appearance of the teeth. Some treatments also restore function. This guide gives a brief, balanced overview of the options your dentist may discuss.
Dental veneers
Thin layers of porcelain or composite bonded to the front of selected teeth to change their colour, shape or size. Porcelain veneers usually involve irreversible removal of enamel, and all veneers can chip or come off and eventually need replacement. Read more about veneers.
Invisalign
Clear, removable aligners that move teeth gradually. They must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, are not suitable for every case and need retainers afterwards. Read more about orthodontics and Invisalign.
Dental implants
A titanium post placed in the jawbone to support a crown, bridge or denture. Implant surgery carries risks, including infection, nerve injury and implant failure, and requires healthy gums and adequate bone. Read more about implants.
Teeth whitening
A peroxide gel lightens the natural colour of teeth. Results vary and fade over time, and sensitivity is common. Read more about whitening.
Crowns and bridges
Crowns cover and protect weakened teeth; bridges replace missing teeth using crowns on neighbouring teeth. Both involve removing tooth structure. Read more about crowns and bridges.
Making a decision
At your consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, discuss what you would like to change, and explain the risks, alternatives (including no treatment) and costs of each option. North Ryde Dentistry is at Unit 4, Building B, 64 Talavera Road, Macquarie Park.
