Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic coverings bonded to the front surface of selected teeth to change their colour, shape or size.
Who may be suitable?
Veneers may be considered for adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to change the appearance of teeth that are chipped, worn, discoloured or unevenly shaped. Decay and gum disease must be treated first. If teeth are crowded, orthodontic treatment may be suggested before, or instead of, veneers.
The process
- Consultation: examination, X-rays, photos and discussion of your goals and alternatives.
- Preparation: a thin layer of enamel is usually removed; this is irreversible. A scan or impression is taken and temporary veneers may be placed.
- Fitting: the veneers are checked for fit and shade, then bonded.
Choosing a look
Tell your dentist if you prefer a natural appearance. Shape and shade can be planned with you, often with a mock-up.
Caring for veneers
- Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste and clean between teeth.
- Attend regular check-ups and cleans.
- Avoid biting nails, ice or pens.
- Wear a night splint if you grind.
Risks
Veneers can chip, crack or come off, sensitivity can occur, and veneers eventually need replacement. Interest-free payment plans are available for eligible patients. Read more about porcelain veneers.
