Veneers are thin layers of porcelain or composite bonded to the front of teeth. They may be considered for chipped, worn, discoloured or unevenly shaped teeth, or small gaps.
Things in favour
- Can change the colour, shape and size of treated teeth.
- Porcelain resists staining.
- Usually less tooth structure is removed than for a crown.
- A mock-up or digital preview can help you and your dentist plan the shape before treatment.
Things against
- Enamel removal is irreversible.
- Sensitivity after treatment.
- Porcelain veneers usually need more than one appointment.
- Veneers can chip, crack or come off, and eventually need replacement.
- Cost, particularly for several teeth, plus future maintenance.
Alternatives
Whitening, composite bonding and orthodontic treatment may address some concerns with less or no removal of tooth structure. Your dentist should explain these and the option of no treatment.
Suitability
Not everyone is suitable for veneers. An examination of your teeth, gums and bite is needed first. Read more about dental veneers.
